How to Talk to Your Mechanic

Posted by & filed under Auto Repair.

If you are unfamiliar with cars and how they work, sometimes it can feel like you and your mechanic are speaking two different languages. And as an auto repair service serving Golden Valley, we certainly understand that not all of our customers are car experts! So we have a few suggestions on the best and most effective way to communicate with our mechanics.

  • Keep in mind that mechanics are experts at their craft. Most are very passionate about cars, and most have to go through several years of specialized schooling and training to work at an auto repair service. And if mechanics work at high-end dealerships, they might have to go through dealer-specific training.
  • Take the time to research your car’s problem before heading to the auto repair service. So if you are hearing a high pitched squeal every time you turn your car on, go online and do some searching to see what the problem might be. That way, you can suggest to the mechanic that it might be the serpentine belt or it might be a problem with your car’s alternator. Taking a few minutes of your time to learn some of your mechanic’s “language” can help him or her diagnose the problem much faster. And that could save you a few bucks on your repairs in the long run.
  • If you don’t agree with the mechanic’s assessment of what is wrong with your car, getting a second opinion is fine. But do not be rude to the mechanic about it. The ones that work at our auto repair service are honest and fully trained, so you can rest assured that, when you come to us for car repairs, the repairs the mechanic suggests are correct. We will never try to nickel and dime you or charge you for unnecessary repairs. And all reputable auto repair services are the same way.
  • Remember the old cliché: “You get more with sugar than you do with vinegar.” Like any other interaction you have with other people, remain polite. If you are unsure of why your mechanic is recommending a certain repair, you have every right to question it. But if you do it with a smile on your face and with a polite tone, that is a much more effective way to communicate. This is also a great way to get more information about the suggested repairs, especially if there is anything you do not understand.
