It’s summertime and for some of us, that means one thing – road trip! As one of the best auto repair shops serving Crystal, we have a few suggestions on how to stay safe while road tripping this summer.
Do you know how to correctly check your tire pressure? According to the Rubber Manufacturers Association, only 10% of drivers knows how to check tire pressure correctly. This is a disturbing statistic, considering how many cars are on the road these days! Making sure you have the right tire pressure is an important part of avoiding auto repair. Tire pressure changes by one to two pounds per square inch (PSI) for every ten degree increase in temperature. An over-inflated tire is just as dangerous as an under-inflated tire.
Making sure your car has enough oil and making sure your car gets regular oil changes are two other great ways to stave off auto repair. Checking your car’s oil level is easy. Simply let the car run for a few minutes, turn it off, make sure it is parked on a level surface and then open the hood and take out the dipstick. Pull it out, wipe it off, stick it back in and then see where the oil ends on the stick. If it’s low, it’s time to add some oil or just get an oil change.
Clogged air filters not only lower your car’s gas efficiency, they can also lead to even more auto repair. Making sure the air filters are regularly changed can increase your gas mileage by as much as ten percent. (Which is a great way to save some money when you’re on a road trip!) Every 12,000 miles or so, get a new air filter in your car.
