When it comes to car and truck repair work, there are plenty of myths out there. Some myths are more believable than others. As an auto service and repair shop near Minneapolis, we thought we would address some of the most common myths that we hear and what the actual truth is.
Myth: You need to have your oil changed every 3,000 miles or every 3 months.
Fact: These days, most vehicle manufacturers recommend that you get your oil changed every 5,000 miles. But you should always check your car’s owner’s manual to see what your specific manufacturer recommends. Some cars can go 7,000 miles or more between oil changes.
Myth: If your check engine light comes on, you probably only need to check your gas cap.
Fact: This used to be the case, but cars these days have on-board diagnostics. So if your check engine light comes on, you should take your care to an auto service and repair shop like ours so we can troubleshoot the problem and get it fixed before it becomes an even bigger one.
Myth: If your brake fluid is low, all you have to do is top it off.
Fact: Your intuition might be to top off low brake fluid, but you should actually bring your car or truck to our auto service and repair shop. We can look over your brakes and put in the proper amount of brake fluid. Sometimes, low brake fluid indicates a bigger problem.
Myth: Premium gasoline is the best and should be used in every car and truck.
Fact: Premium gasoline does not improve your car or truck’s performance. It is not cleaner or better than regular gas; it’s just less combustible. You should only use premium gas if your specific vehicle’s manufacturer recommends that you use it.
Myth: Warm up your car before you drive it and the gas and oil will flow better.
Fact: You should warm up your car during cold winter months so its interior is nice and comfortable for when you are ready to drive, but thanks to fuel injectors, you do not have to worry about warming it up to help its performance.
